Digital Scrapbook Layouts with a Hand-Made Look
Digital scrapbooking is space-saving, money-saving and convenient in many other ways, but it sometimes results in layouts with a flat look that can be less satisfying than the textural look of traditional scrapbooks. Below are a few suggestions for resolving this problem – it IS possible:
• Search the Internet for digital background papers that look like textured cards. You can find all sorts of supplies for digital scrapbooking online, including digital buttons, ribbons, braids and other embellishments commonly used in traditional scrapbooking.
• Use the cut & paste feature of image editing programs to layer different background papers and photos, to create a scrapbook page that does not have that ‘flat’ digital look.
• Drop shadows also add depth to scrapbook layouts, and you can also create an embossed effect digitally.
• Use a combination of digital and traditional scrapbook supplies. Many traditional start experimenting with computer scrapbooking this way – they often come back to this ‘hybrid scrapbooking’ method because it does incorporate the best of both worlds.
• Digital scrapbooking does not necessarily have to replace traditional scrapbooking methods; use your imagination to take advantage of the technological advantages offered by digital scrapbooking, but don’t let it limit your creativity.
There are many, many ways to combine digital and traditional scrapbooking layouts. Rather than create an entire digital layout, make paper scrapbook pages the traditional way and adding one or more digital elements, such as text fonts and clip art and digital photos. For more intricate scrapbook themes, using digital templates is often easier. Many software programs offer free scrapbook templates that you can print out and use for all kinds of scrapbook themes. In addition to the traditional wedding, holiday, baby, birthday and family tree themes, you can use the Internet to discover original scrapbook theme ideas, including (and certainly not limited to) travel themes, animal (or pet) themes, individual family member scrapbook, pregnancy theme and even military scrapbooking themes.
There’s a feeling among many traditional scrapbookers that using the Internet, or your computer for scrapbooking means giving up your paper layouts completely. Obviously, this is not the case. Digital scrapbooking tools are available to you – use as many or as few of them as you like. Combination digital and paper scrapbook layouts can be simple, or they can be more complex.
